Microsoft is releasing a fix for the problem of Outlook crashing after it is opened

Outlook for Microsoft 365 has had a known problem since August that causes it to freeze and crash shortly after being opened. Microsoft has finally released a fix for this problem.

According to Microsoft, “Once Outlook Desktop has finished loading profile and processing, it will open for a few seconds before it stops responding.”

“This problem arises if the EmailAddress value in the Office identification string data is empty.”

According to a support document released on August 11, any time the Outlook Desktop client breaks, a record of it is created in the Windows Event Viewer Application Log as either Event 1000 or Event 1001.

If your system is affected, you may see event records that reference the 0x01483052 exception code, process ID (0x1328), and fault offset (0x000000000024074d).

This week, the business provided information that a patch is currently being rolled out to users on the Current and Semi-Annual Enterprise channels, with other channels to receive it in the near future.

“This issue is fixed in Current Channel Version 2209 (Build 15629.20156) and Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) Version 2208 (Build 15601.20158). As these builds get to the other channels the fixes will follow,” – Microsoft.

Possible Solutions

Microsoft is also proposing other alternatives for users who are still waiting for the rollout to reach their devices:

  • To have Office repopulate your identity registry settings, you must sign out and then back into Office. Log in to Office for more details.
  • If the identity is still not being established correctly, you can disable Support Diagnostics by editing the registry key below (additional information is available here) to prevent Outlook from responding when you try to create an In App ticket via Help, Contact Support.[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General] “DisableSupportDiagnostics”=dword:00000001
  • The email address in the registry path mentioned in the problem description above can be manually set to the identity of the user who is experiencing the problem.

Previously, the Outlook email client would crash when opening emails with tables, such as Uber receipt emails. This issue has since been resolved by Redmond.

Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint crashed when users hovered over their names or photos on contact cards, prompting Microsoft to cancel an August upgrade to Microsoft 365.
