Samsung Introduces their Flagship ISOCELL 200MP HP1 and 50MP GN5 sensors

The ISOCELL HP1, a flagship image sensor introduced by Samsung, will probably be a major highlight of the Galaxy S22.

The machine is capable of 200MP resolution and outputs 12.5MP and 50MP results, utilizing a pixel binning method called ChamaleonCell.

In low light, the HP1 outputs at different resolutionsbased on the available light. It  achieves 12.5-megapixel images with a large 2.56 micrometer pixel pitch.

However, in decent light, the sensor can provide a resolution of 50MP with 1.28μm pixels or 200MP with 0.64μm pixels, as required.

Though Samsung is keeping quiet about the size of the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, it is smaller than the ISOCELL GN2. In terms of resolution, the GN2 has 2.8 μm pixels at a binned resolution of 12.5 MP, whereas the HP1 tops out at 2.56 μm.

The ISOCELL HP1 can record video in 8K at 30 frames per second, maintaining a high field of view. In order to capture 8K video, it lowers the resolution to 8,192×6,144px (50MP).

The 50MP 1.0μm ISOCELL GN5 sensor, which boasts significant improvements in autofocus performance and accuracy, is next. The phone debuts Front Deep Trench Isolation technology, previously exclusive to dual pixel sensors, on a single pixel design.

The GN5 includes Dual Pixel Pro, a complete autofocus system. The two photodiodes in each pixel are spaced 1.0μm apart. Autofocusing pixels work to give results faster by tracking horizontal and vertical movement of the sensor to the entire width.

According to Samsung, the ISOCELL HP1 and GN5 sensors will be integrated into products shortly because samples are available.
