The brand new smart wearable device launched by global technology powerhouse Xiaomi today is the Xiaomi Smart Glasses. MicroLED optical waveguide technology allows for imaging systems and sensors to be incorporated into a common-looking pair of spectacles. In its light 51g package, Xiaomi Smart Glasses, displays notifications, calls, guides, takes images, and translates text.

While Xiaomi Smart Glasses may be used in the here and now, they are also designed to give a view into an advanced future for engineers.

Even to be consistent with ordinary glasses, internal component arrangement and imaging challenges must be tackled. Using MicroLED imaging technology, Xiaomi Smart Glasses lowers the weight and the space requirements for the structure by utilising a design which is smaller in size.

MicroLED is clearly the best option for putting the imaging system into the frame because of its efficient integration. Like OLEDs, MicroLEDs have independently lit pixels, which is a distinct advantage because it means the display may be brighter, with deeper blacks. However, MicroLEDs are made up of a simpler structure, which is longer lasting and with a higher pixel density than the older-generation technology. A better small display, as well as easier screen integration, are achievable with this.

Xiaomi Smart Glasses includes a 2.4mm x 2.02mm display chip. Individual pixels measure 4μm (about the size of a grain of rice), and under a microscope, the display seems big enough to sit within the frame of the glasses. When working with optical designs that were difficult to light, we chose an ultra-efficient monochrome display system capable of up to 2 million nits of brightness.

The MicroLED display accurately transfers light beams to the human eye through its small grating structure, thanks to the optical waveguide lens, which refracts light 180 degrees.

The lens design uses a wavy pattern engraved into the inside to refract light and direct it securely into the human eye. Light is reflected many times, creating a clearer image, and making it easier to use when wearing. Everything above is accomplished utilising a single lens instead of numerous lenses, mirrors, or half mirrors, as in competing goods. The application of optical waveguide technology has permitted smart glasses to get close to traditional spectacles in terms of size and weight, thereby making it easier for them to fit on the face.

Not a “secondary smartphone display” but a completely independent smart wearable.

Xiaomi Smart Glasses incorporates several components, such as small sensors and communication modules, and can thus be considered a terminal that functions independently from your smartphone. It can carry out tasks like navigation, taking images, teleprompter, and instant text and photo translations without any help. The key interaction logic has been designed to prevent unexpected disruptions, to provide valuable information when necessary, and to generally minimise hassles when using the software.

Xiaomi said; We need to build an interaction logic which “does not disturb ordinary use, but displays key information in a timely manner”. After many in-depth discussions, several key scenarios including “key notification”, “phone call”, “navigation”, and “photo translation” were finally confirmed, with XiaoAi AI Assistant as the primary interaction method. In this way, Xiaomi Smart Glasses can “display the most important information at the moment it is needed”.

Obviously, it’s ridiculous to display all push notifications from your smartphone in front of your eyes as shown by the example of “Notifications.” The Smart Glasses constantly monitors user notifications and only displays the most important ones to prevent users from being annoyed.

The most intuitive smart glasses feature is to let you know when someone is calling. Every time they speak, both people will be able to hear each other clearly. This is because the microphone and speaker have dual beamforming capability.

In both driving and riding, the ability to navigate is quite useful. The Xiaomi Smart Glasses provide you a real-time view of your path and allow you to follow it with your eyes.

When travelling, the glasses camera with 5MP capabilities may snap pictures, translate language in images, and is easy. Xiaomi Smart Glasses features an integrated microphone and proprietary translating technology that enables real-time transcription of audio to text with translations. The camera light turns on to indicate images are being shot.

These smart glasses have quad-core ARM processors, touch pads, and an Android operating system. They have a battery, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modules, and a touch pad, as well. With all the cool features, the device is only 51g, even if it’s very heavy for its size. Xiaomi Smart Glasses looks like ordinary glasses, however they perform better than existing smart glasses.

The quote “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” is often used to describe the magical effect produced by modern technology. The Xiaomi Smart Glasses embrace an engineering perspective to invent a view of the future.
