There will be plenty of time now to see how well Google’s custom Tensor chipset, which will be found in all Pixel 6 models, actually works. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Oppo is already planning its own custom system on a chip (SoC), which should be implemented in its flagships as early as 2023. It appears another smartphone manufacturer is looking to follow in Google’s footsteps.

To create its own high-end chip for flagship devices, the company plans on taking advantage of TSMC’s 3nm fabrication process, according to the report. Because Qualcomm and MediaTek have traditionally provided Oppo with chipsets, it appears the company now wants to bypass them and join the group of OEMs that design their own silicone, like Samsung, Apple, and now Google. Oppo has previously relied on these two chipmakers. However, Huawei’s Kirin SoC ambitions have been severely hampered by the complications caused by US sanctions.

Also, Oppo is a part of the BBK Electronics conglomerate, which shares a supply chain with vivo and OnePlus, as well as Realme, which means that if the Oppo in-house chipset is released, it may appear in devices from the aforementioned brands in the near future.
